After a career in newspaper, radio and online journalism here in Devon, I’ve defected to Westcountry Voices because I strongly believe that local news and comment should be trustworthy, accountable and connected to its readers – as an antidote to the national and international media scene. There’s so much deliberate disinformation and distraction out there that people don’t know who or what to believe any more, and this confusion is gleefully exploited by corrupt politicians and businesses. Independent, ethical, high-quality local journalism helps to ground people in reality and expose the flimsiness of fake news. I’m really proud to be part of this movement.

“Do they look like terrorists to you?” Palestine Action supporters resist the criminalisation of dissent

Philippa Davies

Activists in Exeter will be joining a national wave of protest against the banning of Palestine Action as a ‘terrorist organisation’ this Saturday, November 29. Around 25 protesters will defy the ban by sitting quietly outside Exeter Central Station from 1pm, holding placards stating “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action”. It’s part of what […]

Devon quarry plan could put new nature protection laws to the test

Philippa Davies

On the surface it looks like another ‘conservation versus industry’ planning controversy, with the odds predictably stacked against nature and wildlife. A multinational quarrying company wants to expand its operations in Devon, which will mean destroying a large forest. As the company prepares its application for planning permission, a group of local residents are fighting […]

The ‘crazy idea’ that won a £250,000 Lottery grant

Philippa Davies

There are plenty of very stupid and wasteful consumer shopping habits, but top of the list must be buying something quite expensive for one specific job or activity, using it solely for that purpose, and then storing it away in your shed or garage and forgetting about it. We’re talking about things like carpet cleaners, […]

Peaceful protesters in Exeter demand ‘Stop starving Gaza’

Philippa Davies

Friday, July 25, 6pm in Exeter city centre. Shops and cafes closing their doors for the evening, people heading home from work, others on their way to pubs and bars for the start of  the weekend. None of them could miss the large crowd in Bedford Square, just off the main street, where hundreds of […]

We don’t have to become an ‘island of strangers’

Philippa Davies

To really appreciate the importance of Exeter’s Respect Festival, just imagine some of the reactions if a two-day celebration of anti-racism, equality and diversity in the city was proposed for the first time today. It would prove divisive. Many people would love the idea, but you can bet there’d be some pushback, with the word […]

‘The food system as a whole urgently needs to be transformed’

Philippa Davies

“Wherever it is found, hunger highlights the fault lines of inequality that run through that society.” In our society, that could indicate the effects of political austerity measures, including the latest benefit cuts. On a global level, it could point to the people in the world’s poorest nations whose crops are being destroyed by the […]

New powers could stop social media lies from running riot

Philippa Davies

Elon Musk doesn’t like it. Stronger legal measures are in the pipeline to rein in the spread of dangerous lies and misleading claims on social media platforms including X, YouTube, Facebook, TikTok and Google. The racist riots last summer, following the Southport murders, didn’t only show how social media disinformation can provoke real-life violence on […]

‘To fight disinformation, we need to understand it’

Philippa Davies

Could there have been a more topical time to focus on social media disinformation? The day after Donald Trump was sworn in (again) as US President, a live online event on the issue took place, co-organised by West Country Voices. We saw how Elon Musk’s X became a MAGA mouthpiece during Trump’s 2024 election campaign, […]

‘We need large scale-mobilisation against the fascists’

Philippa Davies

You almost had to feel sorry for the far right. Having planned an afternoon rally in Torquay on Saturday, November 30, the handful who turned up found themselves vastly outnumbered by a crowd of around 200 counter-protesters, mainly from local unions and anti-racism groups. Outside the town hall, amid dozens of banners and placards proclaiming […]

Ultra-processed news – why local journalism has gone weird

Philippa Davies

If you’ve looked at a local news website lately, you may have got the feeling that something’s not quite right. Seeking stories about your own area, you click on an interesting headline and find yourself reading about a completely different place. You probably see a lot of content about motoring, shopping and so on, but […]
