‘2073’: film and live Q&A session with director Asif Kapadia and George Monbiot, 5 March , Ashburton Arts Centre

Asif Kapadia’s dystopian drama explores where current events and politics could lead over the next few decades. It’s the year 2073 and the worst fears of modern life have been realized. Surveillance drones fill the burnt orange skies and militarized police roam the wrecked streets, while survivors hide away underground, struggling to remember a free and hopeful existence.

Followed by a live Q&A with director Asif Kapadia and George Monbiot (who appears in the film), chaired by Anthea Simmons, editor-in-chief. Given what is happening, the content is rapidly moving from fiction to fact. We have much to discuss about what’s going on and how we push back against the rise of fascism. We will share details of a live stream to YouTube of this session so that people who cannot get to the event can still view the debate.

There’s a feature in The Guardian on 2073 here, which includes this:

“It’s a dazzlingly creative work. Kapadia started out directing fictional features but he is best known for his hugely popular and critically acclaimed sort-of trilogy of documentaries: Senna, Amy, Diego Maradona. He pioneered a new aesthetic: gorgeously cinematic and defiant of the usual rules. And until 2073, in which he broke his own rule, his documentaries involved no talking heads, just archive overlaid with the voices of those who knew his subjects best, racing driver Ayrton Senna, singer Amy Winehouse and footballer Diego Maradona.”

This film has a (15) certificate as it includes: “violence, threat, injury detail, distressing scenes, very strong language”

“Combining hard-hitting and upsetting real footage of global catastrophes and injustices with scenes of futuristic drama, this intense dystopian documentary contains unflinching moments of violence and some distressing images.”

Presented in collaboration with Ashburton Arts Centre.
