As Donald Trump arrived in the UK on a state visit, a new tool was launched to show exactly what NHS patients would pay if Britain adopted the kind of insurance-based system pushed by Trump and his corporate backers.
My NHS Bill (MyNHSBill.com) reveals the true cost of American-style healthcare by letting users enter NHS treatments and seeing what they would be charged under a US system. From £60,000 cancer treatments to £10,000 childbirth bills, the tool shows just how much the public is shielded from by the NHS.
But that protection is under threat.
Private contracts are quietly being handed out inside the NHS. Trump’s administration has made no secret of its interest in securing access to UK public services for US firms. That includes healthcare. Both the Conservatives and Labour have already allowed private providers to take over key NHS services. And with Nigel Farage gaining ground and hinting that the NHS may not survive in its current form, the danger is growing by the day.
“The British public needs to know that this isn’t a hypothetical risk. It’s already happening,” said Jack Dart, creator of My NHS Bill.
“Private firms are winning contracts inside our NHS. Trump wants more access. Farage cannot be trusted to defend the NHS. And we are sleepwalking towards a system where the size of your wallet decides the care you get.”
How the tool works:
- Users select real NHS procedures, medications or treatments
- The system shows what each would cost under US insurance models
- Prices are shown in pounds using live exchange rates
- Users see a full breakdown of what they would have paid out of pocket
- The site is designed to educate the public and build pressure to keep the NHS public
Political urgency
Donald Trump is in power and actively reshaping global trade policy. His state visit to the UK is already sparking speculation about new commercial deals between the two countries. That includes potential access to public services for US corporations.
Meanwhile, Nigel Farage and Reform UK are rising in the polls and have openly questioned whether the NHS can continue to be funded as a universal public service. At the same time, the major parties have already allowed billions in NHS funding to flow into private hands. Services are being outsourced. Waiting times are growing. More and more people are being pushed towards private treatment because they cannot take the risk to their health from waiting. In the future, under a US model, ‘cannot afford to wait’ will become for millions ‘cannot afford’ full stop.
“This is how you lose a public health service. Not overnight, but in pieces,” said Dart.
“We cannot let Trump or Farage nibble away at the NHS while politicians across the spectrum keep feeding it to private contractors.”
